A string on a circle of radius R and a string on a circle of radius α'/R are physically indistinguishable. Shrink the universe to half its size, and the physics stays identical—provided you also swap momentum modes with winding modes. T-duality is the first hint that geometry itself is not fundamental. It is emergent. It is dual. It is a choice of perspective.
The Coupling Inversion
At strong coupling, a theory becomes its own weak-coupling limit—with electric and magnetic charges exchanged. What appears as a weakly coupled photon at one energy scale is a tightly bound magnetic monopole at another. S-duality is the reason we can compute anything at all: it lets us solve the unsolvable by inverting the coupling constant. The universe is its own Rosetta Stone.
The Hologram
A gravitational theory in five-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space is exactly equivalent to a conformal field theory on its four-dimensional boundary. The inside of a black hole is encoded on its surface. The universe is a hologram—not as metaphor, but as mathematical identity. Every event in the bulk is a correlation on the boundary. We do not live in space. We live on its edge.
